About

Built in India, for how India actually eats

Calolean is independent and self-funded. There are no investors expecting a return, which is why the free plan can stay a free plan.

Why this exists

Nearly every calorie tracker worth using was designed somewhere that eats in components. A chicken breast, a cup of rice, a serving of broccoli — three items, three weights, three searches, done.

An Indian plate does not work like that. Dinner is three rotis of a size nobody measures, a katori of dal that was cooked for the family rather than portioned, some sabzi, a spoon of achar and whatever came out of the fridge. Logging it in an app built abroad means five searches, five portion guesses and a result you do not trust.

So most people try for two weeks and stop. Not from a lack of discipline — from friction. The tool was asking for effort that the food did not make available.

Calolean started from that specific problem. Photograph the plate as it is. Let a vision model do the decomposition that a human should not have to. Then, because the app is already holding your logs and your targets, let it answer questions about your actual day instead of dispensing advice written for everybody.

Who makes it

Calolean is built and run by a very small independent team in India — currently one person doing the design, the engineering and the replies to support email. If you write to contact@calolean.com, the person who answers is the person who wrote the code.

That has consequences worth stating plainly. Things ship faster than they would at a larger company, and occasionally they ship with rough edges. There is no growth target being chased, no dark-pattern quota, and nobody upstairs asking why the free plan is so generous. It also means feature requests are read by someone who can act on them the same week.

What it is not

Calolean is not a medical device, and it does not diagnose or treat anything. It is a general nutrition and fitness tool. If you are pregnant, managing diabetes or thyroid conditions, recovering from an eating disorder, or working around any other medical condition, please work with a doctor or a registered dietitian — and treat anything the app says as background information rather than instruction.

It is also not a social network. There is no feed, no follower count, no public leader board and no streak designed to make you feel bad on the day you miss it. Consistency over months is what changes body composition, and shame is a famously poor engine for it.

Principles

Four decisions that shaped the product

Written down here so they can be held against us later.

Estimates, described as estimates

A photograph cannot see the oil in the pan. Calolean says so rather than presenting a confident number it has no right to. Every scan carries a confidence figure and every portion is editable before it is saved.

Compute goes where the data is safest

Form analysis runs in your browser because that is where your video should stay. It would have been easier to upload the file and process it server-side. It would also have been worse.

Your data leaves whenever you want

Export is a button, not a support ticket. Deletion is a button, not a thirty-day waiting period. Anything else is a hostage situation dressed up as retention.

Adverts stay away from anything personal

Sponsored cards are matched against a short, hand-written whitelist of food and fitness categories. Your conversations, photographs and health logs are never used to choose an advert, and they never will be.

What's next

Where the product is going

An Android app.The web app works well in a phone browser, but there is one thing a website is simply not permitted to do: read your step count, heart rate and sleep from the phone’s own health store. On Android that data lives behind Health Connect, which is an on-device API with no browser equivalent. A native app is the only route to it, and it is the next major piece of work.

A deeper Indian food database. Regional dishes, restaurant chains, packaged Indian brands — the long tail that generic databases handle badly and that determines whether a scan feels accurate or approximate.

Premium. An ad-free tier with higher AI allowances, so that people who use the app daily can pay for it directly rather than through advertising. See the pricing page for what is planned.

Try it on one meal

The fastest way to judge whether any of this is true is to photograph something and look at the numbers.
